The Medical Renal Pathology service at UC San Diego provides
comprehensive diagnostic expertise and services related to the pathology of
medical disorders (non-tumoral) of the kidney. This is a unique area in
surgical pathology, one that routinely combines light microscopy,
immunofluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy to interpret renal biopsies.
Furthermore, most cases require clinical correlation to reach a correct
diagnosis, and pathologist-to-clinician communication is often required.
Accordingly, we discuss every case with the nephrologist or rheumatologist that
ordered the biopsy. These discussions facilitate patient care by placing any
observed morphologic derangements in the appropriate clinical context so that
their clinical significance can be discerned. Faculty of the service are
actively involved in the education of medical school students, residents and
fellows. A two-week elective rotation is open for nephrology fellows at UCSD
and Rady Children’s Hospital.
The Medical Renal Pathology Service at UC San Diego
routinely provides second opinion consultations on cases from other Medical
Centers in the region and Internationally, including cases from Rady Children’s
Hospital San Diego. We are available for consultation on all aspects of Medical
Renal Pathology.
