There are multiple ongoing clinical trials for people with new onset of type 1 diabetes. The overall aim of these trials is to identify a means of blocking further autoimmune destruction of the beta cells. Eventually, this therapy may also be used at an even earlier stage to prevent type 1 diabetes.
The PDRC also participates in two landmark studies: the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange and the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention. Both studies offer clinicians and researchers the opportunity to learn more about treatment outcomes of patients with type 1 diabetes and the incidence of type 1 diabetes in family members at high risk of developing diabetes.
Our investigators also conduct clinical trials for individuals with type 2 diabetes. These trials will help increase therapy options for patients with type 2 diabetes under the age of 18.
The use of technology in the management of diabetes and obesity in pediatric patients has become a recent focus of clinical investigation. Presently we are evaluating the use of glucose meters with built in wireless communication to promote diabetes self-management and facilitate communication between the patient's family and health care team.
