Second Year Fellows

Justin Assioun
Justin grew up locally in Encinitas, California where he developed his passion for surfing, skating, and learning the art to shaping and glassing surfboards. He moved to Berkeley to complete his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley in Integrative Biology. He completed his medical school training internationally at St. George’s University School of Medicine followed by his Pediatric residency at the University at Buffalo. His academic interest lie within medical resuscitation and ultrasound. Justin continues to enjoy surfing with his brother as well exploring and traveling with his wife and their Australian Shepard. He looks forward to combining his interest of surfing with his passion for emergency medicine by teaching children about ocean safety and giving surf lessons to kids with special needs.

Tamara Casas
Tamara Casas grew up a few minutes from UCSD in Chula Vista, CA. She attended college at UCLA where she studied physiology and did clinical research in the SICU at Cedars Sinai. After graduating college, she took a year to travel to Spain to visit family, and then did a Post Bacc at University at Buffalo in New York. She attended medical school at Hofstra University in Long Island, NY and returned home to UCSD where she completed her residency in Emergency Medicine. Her academic interests include global medicine as well as DEI efforts in medicine.  She enjoys the outdoors, camping and traveling (has been to 24 countries!).

Danielle Hatt
Danielle grew up in Southern California and graduated from Azusa Pacific University where she majored in Biology. She attended medical school in both Brisbane, Australia and New Orleans, Louisiana through the University of Queensland, Ochsner Clinical School before finding her way back home to complete her Pediatric residency at UC San Diego/Rady Children's Hospital. She enjoys golf, the beach, and any outdoor activity where she's spending time with her best friend and partner, Cameron. Danielle's academic interests include Medical Education and Resuscitation. She was thrilled to continue her PEM training here in San Diego where she has fantastic mentorship, friends, and her family.

Sujung Kim
Sujung grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ, and studied Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. After a year in Los Angeles as a City Year corps member, she completed medical school at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ, followed by pediatric residency and a year as chief resident at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. She's excited to be back on the west coast for fellowship. Her academic interests include sedation and anaphylaxis. She also likes tennis, biking, hiking, and water sports, and has been enjoying San Diego's conducive weather as well as its sunsets and cool plants.​

First Year Fellows
Joe Bartoletti
​Joe was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI where he studied Biomedical Sciences and Spanish at Marquette University before completing medical school and residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Wisconsin. He is excited to learn more about living in San Diego and the application of POCUS and global health. Outside of work, he is an avid college basketball fan, hosts an informal sports “podcast” with his friends, and enjoys anything fun, active, and competitive outdoors. 

Kyna Donohue
Kyna is a first year PEM fellow who was born and raised in Boston, MA, completed medical school at the University of Vermont, and pediatric residency at the Tuft's Floating Hospital ('20-'22...RIP) and Boston Children's ('22-'23). She is very excited to leave the blizzards of New England for the sunshine and waves of San Diego! Her interests include medical education, improving care for LGBTQ+ patients, and optimizing community emergency response systems. 

Amanda Leng Smith
Amanda grew up in Plainview, NY. Went to Columbia for college, Stony Brook for Medical School, and completed residency at Cohen Children's Hospital in queens. Excited to be leaving NY to experience warmer San Diego and experience all the city has to offer.Enjoys going to the beach, exploring new breweries with my co fellows, running, and baking. 

Caroline Morris
Caroline grew up in Northwestern Pennsylvania. She completed her undergraduate degree in Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh where she realized her passion for medicine and eventually Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She received her medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated Residency at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Caroline is excited to join the PEM team at Rady Children's Hospital and explore all that sunny San Diego has to offer!
