About

The UC San Diego Endocrinology Fellowship Program provides a broad education over two years.  Rigorous clinical training occurs in three academic hospitals, each with its own inpatient and outpatient components. Our three hospital systems provide complementary experiences serving diverse patient populations.

UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest is a 390-bed facility that serves a diverse population ranging from underserved to referrals from around the world.  Fellows consult on  complex patients on the HIV/AIDS service as well as endocrinopathies associated with trauma and burn surgery.

UC San Diego Medical Center in La Jolla is composed of three hospital systems which are physically connected in one location. The Medical Center also serves as a tertiary/quaternary referral center providing a multitude of specialized services including cardiopulmonary, liver, kidney and bone marrow transplantation programs.

  • Jacobs Medical Center is a 245-bed facility that opened in November 2016. It is a tertiary referral center providing advanced surgical and cancer therapies, and it has a separate pavilion for women's health and neonatal care.  Fellows care for patients on solid organ oncology, bone marrow transplant, and advanced surgical care wards.  Patients from Moores Cancer Center, the primary site for outpatient oncology care and the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Care Center (with nearly 350 medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons and researchers) are cared for at Jacobs Medical Center.  Fellows consult on a variety of endocrinopathies related to immunotherapy and other cancer-related complications.
  • The Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center opened in 2011 is both a research facility and a patient care center.  Fellows provide perioperative care for patients undergoing off-pump coronary bypass surgery, minimally invasive valve replacement, LVAD placement, and heart transplant, as well as  periprocedural care of patients in the preeminent pulmonary thromboendarterectomy program in the country.
  • Thornton Hospital is a 119-bed facility and the first hospital on the La Jolla Campus.  Fellows care for specialized patient populations including pancreatic diabetes on the cystic fibrosis ward.

Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System (VA Medical Center) is a 225-bed facility located in La Jolla adjacent to the UC San Diego School of Medicine campus. The VA Medical Center offers excellent experience in the management of endocrine problems of the veteran population. The VA San Diego Healthcare System delivers high quality, compassionate care to over 86,000 Veterans in the greater San Diego area, and is a regional referral center for cardiovascular surgery and spinal cord injury. VASDHS has one of the largest research programs in the VA Healthcare System.
