RMAS Faculty Delivers ACRO Webinar
Arno J. Mundt MD FASTRO FACRO, Professor and RMAS Chair, was the featured speaker in a Webinar hosted by the
American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) on June 25th. The Webinar focused on Business Issues in Radiation Oncology including strategies to grow one’s clinical practice through creative solutions and innovative practice models. Dr. Mundt is a long-time ACRO member and has served as ACRO President and Chair of the Board of Chancellors. He is also a recipient of the ACRO Gold Medal and the FAME Award (Fabulous Mentor of Excellence).
RMAS Faculty Joins ASCO Gynecologic Cancer Guideline Advisory Group
Catheryn Yashar MD FACRO FASTRO FACR FABS, Professor, RMAS Assistant Vice-Chair for Clinical Affairs and Chief of the UCSD Medical Staff, has joined the
American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO Gynecologic Cancer Guideline Advisory Group (GAG). Guideline Advisory Groups make recommendations to the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee (CPGC) on identifying and prioritizing topics for guideline development towards the goal of ASCO offering a more comprehensive portfolio of authoritative practice guidelines.

Arno. J. Mundt MD FACRO FASTRO received the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) Fabulous Mentor of Excellence (FAME) Award at the Annual Meeting of ACRO held in Ft. Lauderdale. A new award in 2020, it recognizes his long term involvement in education and mentorship within the field and in the college.

Radiation Oncology and Medical Physics Residency Match Day
March is the month that resident applicants in both Radiation Oncology and Medical Physics participate in nationwide Residency Matches. After a long season of applications and interviews, rank lists are submitted and applicants find out where in the country they will be living and working. It’s an exciting day for the applicants and the programs. We are extremely pleased by the 2020 Residency Match results for both of our programs! California Protons Becomes UC San Diego Health Cancer Network Affiliate
On May 1st 2019, the California Proton Center officially became part of the
UC San Diego Health Cancer Network. This is a culmination of many months of work by many individuals and represents an important milestone for the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences. Over the last year, we have sought to work closer with the California Proton Center and integrate our services and programs for patients with a wide range of malignancies. A major goal has been optimizing clinical operations and treatment planning as well as the establishment of clinical trials.
RMAS Physics Resident Rotates in Argentina
Senior Medical Physics Resident
Everaldo Flores Martinez PhD (far left) recently completed an International Away Rotation at the Centro Oncologico Integral de Neuquen in Argentina. A special aspect of the RMAS Medical and Physics Residency Programs is the opportunity to rotate abroad and learn how radiotherapy is performed in different health systems. Residents have rotated in countries ranging from Costa Rica to Austria.
RMAS Research Faculty Receives a R01 Research Grant
Jona Hattangadi-Gluth MD, Associate Professor and Assistant Vice-Chair Faculty Climate and Development, has been awarded an R01 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Entitled “Image-Guided Cognitive-Sparing Radiosurgery for Brain Metastases: Avoidance of Eloquent White Matter and Hippocampal Regions”, this study builds on her previous work in advanced radiotherapy/radiosurgery techniques in brain tumors.
RMAS Faculty Recognized for Teaching Excellence
Jim Murphy MD, RMAS Associate Professor, received the
2019 Excellence in Faculty Teaching Award from the Moores Cancer Center in recognition of his long-term commitment to education and training of students and residents. This award was delivered at a Moores Cancer Faculty Town Hall on Tuesday March 19th in the Goldberg Auditorium. In addition to this teaching award, other MCC Faculty were also recognized for excellence in scientific discovery, translational research, clinical trials, and clinical care.
RMAS Resident Receives ASCO Young Investigator Award
Senior RMAS Radiation Oncology Resident
Lucas Vitzthum MD has been selected to receive a 2019 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Conquer Cancer Foundation
Young Investigator Award. His proposal involves predicting the risk of opioid use in cancer patients, a very timely and important problem. He will receive his award at the Annual ASCO Meeting on Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago.
