Research

The Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics is actively involved in clinical research to improve the care of children who have been victims of abuse and neglect.

• The Division is part of CAPNET a rigorous multicenter research data network to make the care of potentially abused children and their families more effective, safe and fair. CAPNET (capnetresearch.org)
• The Division is conducting ongoing research regarding COVID-19 and its effect on child abuse and neglect. Some of this research will be highlighted on a popular podcast called High Truths (Home Page - High Truths) about the increased rate of illicit drug ingestions in young children. Additionally, our single center research has been highlighted on both national and local news outlets.

• The Division has ongoing research partnering with Child Welfare Services (CWS) to link hospital and CWS data to study long term outcomes of children who are victims of abuse.
• The Division has ongoing research in collaboration with the UCSD Department of Surgery to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 on physical abuse.
• Faculty in the Division are active on national research committees and host national research seminars. 
  

Along with clinical research the Division has multiple ongoing Quality Improvement projects that are organizing and streamlining care delivered to children who are victims of abuse.

• We are partnered with the Division of Emergency Medicine on a P4P project to improve child abuse evaluations in the Emergency Care Center.
• As a part of the Chadwick Center, one of the nations largest and well recognized child advocacy centers, our Division actively participates in quality improvement projects to enhance the response to child maltreatment. 

Our Faculty are involved in a diverse array of national and international professional societies committed to improving prevention, treatment and research of child maltreatment.
