Our mission is to provide compassionate, developmentally appropriate, culturally aware and trauma-informed care to young people from all backgrounds.

The UCSD Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine is dedicated to meeting the unique physical, cognitive and socioemotional needs of adolescents and young adults through outstanding clinical service, medical education, scholarship, and advocacy.   


Division Chief

Dr. David Inwards-Breland assumed the role of Chief of the UCSD Department of Pediatrics Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine in 2020. He serves as the Medical Director of the Adolescent and Young Adult Clinic and the Co-Director of the Center for Gender Affirming Care at Rady Children's Hospital.  Previously, Dr. Inwards-Breland served as the Clinical Director of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Seattle Children's Hospital, where he founded and directed their first Gender Clinic.   He has received many awards including Top Doctors, Award for Distinguished Service in Promoting Diversity at Seattle Children's Hospital, and Community Leader of the Year from the Greater Seattle Business Association.  His research interests include adolescent depression, transgender youth, disenfranchised youth, and adolescent male health.

Welcome to the newest  division at UC San Diego Department of Pediatrics: the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Medicine, which launched on April 15, 2020!  The Division of AYA Medicine is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate, trauma-informed and evidenced-based care to adolescents and young adults through developmentally designed clinical services, advocacy, scholarship and teaching. AYA Medicine faculty members include Dr. David Inwards-Breland (Division Chief), Dr. Maya Kumar, Dr. Kay Rhee, and Dr. Kanani Titchen.
